Course Description
This course is designed to give students the opportunity to participate in the rich tradition of Hawaiian choral music. The theme of our mele this semester is “Na Hulu Ali‘i” music for and by our Ali‘i!
Course Objectives
The Student will:
- Sing the melody as well as their vocal part for each song.
- Sing the Hawaiian words with correct pronunciation.
- Study the translation of each song to enhance its understanding and performance.
- Study the important historical & geographical background of each song.
- This may be provided by the instructor or through personal research
- Contribute to the overall unity of the musical experience within the ensemble.
- One need not be a solo singer but instead, someone who enjoys singing and has an appreciation of
Hawaiian Choral music. - This course meets the music department’s Performance Skills Objectives by focusing on:
- performance skills
- basic musicianship
- knowledge of literature
- appreciation & understanding of diverse musical cultures.
- Graduate students will be expected to show superior musicianship and a greater commitment to the learning process.

All scores will be provided to you.
A Hawaiian Dictionary is quite useful and a recording device is also a useful tool in recording rehearsals for future study (singing at home, car, or bus). Uncle Phil has created a “drop-box” for all manuscript as well as syllabus.
Grading system
30%—Three written quizzes (10% each) during the semester. See calendar for details. Knowing the translation of assigned mele and diacritical markings is the focus.
50%—ATTENDANCE, which includes class attendance as well as festivals & all performances
20%—Final (written, oral, and Paina) scheduled for the last day of class. See calendar.

- Men: Aloha shirt, long dark pants, lei
- Women: Mu‘umu‘u with sleeves (demi-length or longer), lei
ALL MUSIC FOR SEMESTER CONCERT IS PERFORMED MEMORIZED!!
